Fresno, CA — A 16-year-old teenager lost his life Thursday morning after being hit by a vehicle on Highway 99 in northwest Fresno. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) identified the victim as Maxwell Thompson, a student at Justin Garza High School. The incident has left the local community grieving and serves as a reminder of the dangers of busy roadways.

CHP officials said the crash occurred just before 9 a.m. near Herndon Avenue. Investigators determined that Thompson ran in front of a pickup truck in the far right lane as he attempted to cross the northbound traffic to reach the center divider. The driver of the truck was unable to avoid striking the teenager.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the collision. Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene, and authorities confirmed that the driver of the truck remained on site and fully cooperated with investigators. Officials noted that alcohol or drugs were not factors in the crash.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash to better understand the events leading up to the collision. No charges have been filed, and officers emphasized that the case appears to be a tragic accident. CHP investigators reminded the public of the importance of caution when crossing busy roads, even when attempting to reach safety in a median or divider area.
