Authorities are investigating a deadly two-vehicle crash in Mobile County that claimed the life of one man and left a police officer injured early Wednesday morning. The collision occurred along Alabama Highway 217 and has prompted an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Highway Patrol Division, the crash happened at approximately 5:43 a.m. near the 10-mile marker on Alabama Highway 217. Officials said the location is about one mile north of the city limits of Semmes. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene after reports of a serious head-on collision involving two vehicles.
Investigators identified the victim as 33-year-old Mason W. Cure of Chunchula. Authorities said Cure was driving a 2000 Toyota Tacoma when it collided head-on with a 2022 Ford Explorer operated by an on-duty officer with the Semmes Police Department.
First responders arrived at the crash site shortly after the incident was reported. Officials confirmed that Cure died at the scene from injuries sustained in the collision. Investigators also noted that he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, which may have contributed to the severity of his injuries.
The Semmes police officer involved in the crash was injured and transported by emergency medical personnel to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities have not released additional details about the officer’s condition but confirmed that the injuries were being evaluated by medical staff.
Officials with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency say the crash remains under active investigation. Troopers will continue examining evidence from the scene, including roadway conditions, vehicle positions, and other possible factors that may have contributed to the collision. Authorities are also reminding drivers to wear seat belts and remain cautious while traveling, especially on rural highways and during early morning hours when visibility and traffic conditions can change quickly.
