DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — Douglas County authorities have arrested a suspect in the fatal shooting of 19-year-old University of West Georgia student Lyric Latrice Farley over the weekend. The tragedy occurred Saturday afternoon in the Kings Corner area of Douglasville, leaving family, friends, and the community in shock.
Investigators said the shooting happened shortly after 1 p.m. in the parking lot behind a Dollar General on Central Church Road. Deputies responding to a 911 call reporting shots fired found Farley inside a vehicle, where she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities confirmed that Farley, 19, of Carrollton, and the suspect, David Mark Anthony Powell, 20, of Douglasville, knew each other and had a prior personal relationship. Evidence, witness statements, and surveillance footage suggest the two met following a disagreement, during which Farley was fatally shot. Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from that encounter.
Powell was taken into custody without incident early Sunday morning at approximately 1:30 a.m. after deputies stopped a vehicle on Interstate 20 near Highway 5. He has been charged with murder and aggravated assault and is scheduled to appear before a judge in Douglas County Superior Court.
Multiple firearms were recovered as part of the investigation, and vehicles believed to be connected to the shooting were impounded. Authorities continue to gather evidence to piece together the exact events that led to Farley’s death.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that the investigation is ongoing. Officials urge anyone with information related to the shooting to come forward. Meanwhile, the community is mourning the loss of a young life and offering support to Farley’s family during this devastating time.
