DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. — Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of a 75-year-old man Friday night along Boydton Plank Road. The deadly incident has prompted a search for the driver involved, who fled the scene and has not yet been identified.
According to state police, the crash occurred at approximately 8:50 p.m. in the 6500 block of Boydton Plank Road (Route 1). Troopers said a 75-year-old man had exited his vehicle, which was stopped in the center turn lane leading into the Aldi Distribution Center, when the tragic incident happened.
Investigators said the man was standing outside his vehicle and speaking with the driver of a tractor-trailer that was stopped behind him. While the two were talking, an unknown vehicle traveling northbound on Route 1 struck the pedestrian. At the time of the crash, the man was reportedly standing in the northbound travel lane.
The victim was identified as Linwood Earl Williams, 75, of Snow Hill, North Carolina. Emergency crews responded to the scene and transported Williams to Bon Secours Southside Medical Center for treatment. Despite medical efforts, police said Williams later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Virginia State Police confirmed that the driver of the vehicle involved did not stop and fled the scene following the crash. At this time, investigators do not have a description of the suspect vehicle. Troopers said alcohol involvement remains under investigation, but no conclusions have been reached.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to identify the driver responsible.
