Lelene Gordon Dies in Residential Fire on Selma’s West Side

SELMA — Authorities in Selma are investigating a deadly residential fire that claimed the life of a woman Tuesday afternoon, leaving a west-side neighborhood shaken and mourning the sudden loss. Emergency crews were called to a private home located off a major roadway, where heavy flames had overtaken the residence by the time firefighters arrived.

According to local officials, fire crews were dispatched after reports of a house fire in the area. Upon arrival, firefighters found the home significantly impacted by flames and smoke. Crews immediately began working to extinguish the fire and search the residence. Despite their efforts, a woman inside the home was later confirmed dead as a result of injuries sustained in the blaze.

Family members identified the victim as a 64-year-old woman, Lelene Gordon who lived at the residence. Authorities have not released her name publicly, noting that next of kin were notified before information was shared. Officials and emergency responders expressed condolences to the victim’s family, acknowledging the devastating nature of the loss as the investigation continues.

The fire was reported during the afternoon, a time when neighbors were nearby and quickly noticed smoke rising from the home. Residents in the area described seeing emergency vehicles arrive within minutes, with firefighters working to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading to nearby properties. Law enforcement officers assisted at the scene, helping secure the area and manage traffic and onlookers.

Fire investigators are now working to determine the cause of the blaze. At this stage, officials have not said whether the fire was accidental or caused by another factor. Investigators are expected to examine the structure closely, analyze burn patterns, and review possible ignition sources, including electrical systems and household appliances, to better understand how the fire started and spread.

Authorities emphasized that determining the origin of a residential fire can be a lengthy process, especially when there is extensive damage. Until the investigation is complete, no conclusions will be released. No other injuries were reported, and it remains unclear whether anyone else was inside the home at the time of the fire. Officials say additional details will be shared as they become available, while reminding residents of the importance of fire safety measures such as working smoke alarms and emergency preparedness plans.
