WASHINGTON, D.C. — A man was shot and killed early Tuesday morning in Southeast Washington, and police are now searching for a suspect seen fleeing the scene on an electric scooter, according to recently released surveillance footage. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has identified the victim as 50-year-old Lawrence Meekins of Northwest D.C.
Officers responded to the 1800 block of E Street Southeast after receiving reports of gunfire around 3 a.m. When they arrived, they found Meekins suffering from gunshot wounds. D.C. Fire and EMS arrived shortly after and attempted life-saving measures, but Meekins was pronounced dead at the scene. His death adds to the growing number of homicides in the District this year.
Police have not yet disclosed a possible motive for the shooting or whether Meekins knew the suspect. Detectives continue to investigate and are reviewing surveillance footage and collecting evidence from the scene and surrounding areas. The case remains open, and investigators are exploring all potential leads.
As part of the investigation, MPD released a video that shows the suspected shooter leaving the area shortly after the gunfire, riding an electric scooter. The footage is now circulating online and through local media in hopes that someone will recognize the individual. Electric scooters are not uncommon in the city, but police believe the unique method of escape could help identify the suspect.
To encourage public assistance, MPD is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case. Authorities are urging anyone who may have seen or heard something unusual near the scene to come forward. Information can be provided by calling (202) 727-9099 or texting 50411. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
The killing of Lawrence Meekins has further alarmed residents in Southeast D.C., where gun violence has surged in recent months. Community leaders and local organizations continue to call for increased police presence and investment in safety programs to combat the rise in shootings.
As detectives work to bring justice to Meekins’ family, officials emphasize that public involvement is crucial. They hope the release of the scooter video will be the key to solving this case and preventing further violence in the area.
