Ohio Man, Kenneth Phillips Dies by Suicide Following Vehicle Pursuit in Wise County

WISE COUNTY, Va. — Authorities in Wise County are investigating after a 47-year-old Ohio man, wanted in connection with a sexual assault investigation, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound early Tuesday morning following a pursuit. The incident has left law enforcement reviewing the events that unfolded during a tense and tragic encounter.

The Wise County and City of Norton Sheriff’s Office were alerted by the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office in Ohio about the suspect, later identified as Kenneth Phillips. Phillips was believed to be traveling along U.S. 23 in Wise County and was considered potentially armed and suicidal, heightening concerns among responding deputies.

Officials reported that deputies observed Phillips driving a gray 2018 Chevrolet Colorado with Ohio registration while failing to maintain his lane. When deputies attempted to initiate a traffic stop, Phillips did not yield, prompting a pursuit. Assisting officers deployed spike strips near the entrance of Mountain Empire Community College in Big Stone Gap, successfully bringing the vehicle to a stop.

After the truck came to a halt, deputies heard a gunshot. Authorities confirmed that Phillips had suffered a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound. A firearm was recovered inside the vehicle, positioned between the driver’s seat and the suspect’s leg. Emergency responders pronounced Phillips deceased at the scene.

The Scioto County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the original sexual assault case in which Phillips was wanted. Meanwhile, Wise County authorities say the investigation into the pursuit, stop, and fatal incident remains ongoing, with officials reviewing bodycam footage, evidence, and witness statements to fully understand the sequence of events.

While the case raises questions for both local residents and law enforcement, officials emphasize the complexity of handling incidents involving armed and potentially suicidal suspects. The pursuit and tragic outcome serve as a reminder of the risks officers face daily and the importance of ongoing investigations to ensure accountability and clarity in critical incidents.
