CHICAGO — A homicide investigation is underway after a man was found shot to death inside his home late Friday night on Chicago’s South Side, according to city officials. The deadly incident has left residents of the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood shaken, as police continue working to determine what led to the fatal shooting inside a private residence.
Chicago police said the shooting occurred at approximately 10:21 p.m. Friday in the 400 block of East 72nd Street. Officers initially responded to a report of a person shot near 72nd Street and King Drive/Vernon Avenue. Upon arriving in the area, officers were directed to a first-floor apartment at the address, where they made the grim discovery inside the home.
Once inside the residence, officers found a 49-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his body. The victim was unresponsive, and the scene was immediately secured. Emergency medical personnel were called to the location, but despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene, marking another fatal shooting in the city.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office later identified the victim as Kazeem Jinadu, 49. Officials confirmed that Jinadu’s listed address matched the residence where the shooting occurred, indicating he was inside his own home at the time of the attack. His death has added to the toll of gun violence impacting neighborhoods across Chicago.
Police confirmed that a firearm was recovered at the scene, though authorities have not shared details about the weapon or how it may be connected to the shooting. Investigators have also not released information about how many shots were fired or where exactly the firearm was located inside the apartment. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear.
As of the latest update, no arrests have been made, and no suspect information has been released. Investigators have not disclosed whether Jinadu knew the person responsible or if the shooting was targeted. Detectives continue to process evidence, canvass the area, and review potential surveillance footage as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police are urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward and assist investigators. Even small details could help shed light on what happened inside the residence that night. As the investigation continues, family members, friends, and neighbors are left mourning the loss of Kazeem Jinadu, whose life was tragically cut short in the place he called home.
