OTTAWA, ONTARIO — The Gloucester Cumberland Ringette Association (GCRA) and communities across Ontario are mourning the tragic loss of Julia Wilson, affectionately known as “Jules,” a 21-year-old ringette player whose unexpected passing has left many heartbroken. Julia, a proud native of Ottawa and a dedicated athlete, was widely admired both on and off the ice.
Julia had been playing ringette since the age of 15 and wore jersey #20 for the GCRA. Her teammates and coaches say she brought energy, kindness, and love for the sport to every practice and game. “She made the world a better place, and our sport is better because she was a part of it,” the association shared in a statement. Her loss has deeply impacted the ringette community, where she was known for her warm spirit and dedication.
Julia passed away earlier this week, though no cause of death has been made public. Her family, while grieving deeply, confirmed that she was an organ donor. In her final act of selflessness, Julia gave the gift of life to three people in need of critical organ transplants. Her friends describe her as a true hero whose strength and compassion will continue to live on through others.
In a heartfelt message shared on July 2, friends Taylor Forrest and Danika Osborne wrote, “She led a fulfilling and beautiful life, sharing love and kindness every day. Jules touched the lives of everyone who knew her, and we are so grateful for the love she gave us and the memories we shared.” They added that ringette was one of Julia’s greatest joys and a place where she made her most cherished friendships.
As news of her passing spread, the ringette community responded with tributes, messages, and shared memories celebrating Julia’s life. The GCRA and other local teams are expected to honor her memory in upcoming games. Plans for a memorial or celebration of life will be shared once they are finalized.
The family has requested privacy during this difficult time as they come to terms with the loss of their daughter. Julia’s legacy—as a player, a friend, and an organ donor—will be remembered by many. Her jersey number, #20, will forever hold a special place in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
