45-year-old Joseph Kidwell killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-69

A tragic early-morning crash on Interstate 69 in Grant County has claimed the life of a Marion man, leaving family, friends, and the community reeling. Deputies with the Grant County Sheriff’s Office said the accident occurred around 6:33 a.m. on Tuesday near the 272-mile marker in the northbound lanes, after multiple 911 calls reported a vehicle rollover and several people ejected from a vehicle.

Investigators reported that two vehicles were involved in the crash: a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado and a 1996 Chevrolet truck. The older truck had broken down along the side of the highway, and its occupants were waiting for family members to arrive and assist them when the collision occurred. The crash unfolded in a matter of seconds, highlighting the dangers of stalled vehicles on busy highways.

Authorities said that a semi-tractor trailer was switching lanes nearby when the Silverado driver attempted to avoid it, causing the vehicle to veer off the roadway and strike the disabled 1996 truck. The force of the collision resulted in multiple injuries and significant damage to both vehicles. First responders arrived quickly at the scene, working to provide emergency care to the victims.

Tragically, one of the injured, Joseph A. Kidwell, 45, of Marion, died at the scene despite life-saving efforts by emergency personnel. Other victims were transported to a hospital in Fort Wayne with serious injuries. Authorities have not yet released the identities of those who survived, but they are being closely monitored for their conditions.

Several agencies responded to assist at the crash scene, including the Indiana State Police, multiple local fire departments, EMS units, and the Grant County Emergency Management Agency. Officials worked together to secure the area, provide medical care, and clear the highway to prevent further incidents. The collaboration highlighted the coordination needed during large-scale traffic emergencies.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing as authorities seek to understand the full circumstances that led to the collision. Deputies are asking anyone who witnessed the accident or has information to contact the Grant County Sheriff’s Office at (765) 662-9836. Officials hope that public tips will help clarify the sequence of events, identify contributing factors, and prevent similar tragedies in the future. Meanwhile, the community mourns the loss of Joseph A. Kidwell and the impact of this fatal accident on his family and friends.
