A tragic accident in Makena on Thursday claimed the life of a 47-year-old Texas man and left a woman critically injured. According to the Maui Police Department, the fatal crash occurred along Makena Road, about one mile south of Oneloa Beach South Road, when a 2024 BMW X5 overturned after striking several rocks on both sides of the roadway.
Authorities identified the driver as Joseph Donaldson, a resident of League City, Texas. Police say Donaldson was traveling southbound when he crossed the center line and veered off to the left shoulder, where the vehicle struck multiple rocks before re-entering the road. The SUV then crossed over to the right shoulder, hit more rocks, and flipped over, coming to rest on its roof in the middle of the roadway.
During the violent rollover, Donaldson was ejected from the vehicle. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the site. Police reported that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, which may have contributed to the severity of his injuries.
A 46-year-old woman, also from Texas, was a passenger in the BMW. She suffered critical injuries and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center for emergency treatment. No update on her condition has been released as of Friday morning. Authorities have not disclosed whether the woman was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Investigators believe that speed was a contributing factor in the deadly rollover. The Maui Police Department’s Vehicle Homicide Unit is continuing to investigate the case to determine the exact sequence of events and whether any other factors, such as impairment or distraction, played a role. Officials said road conditions and vehicle damage are also being reviewed as part of the ongoing probe.
Thursday’s crash adds to a growing number of fatal accidents reported across Maui County this year. Police continue to urge motorists to obey posted speed limits, remain alert, and always wear seatbelts to prevent further tragedies on the island’s scenic but often winding roads. The investigation remains active, and additional details are expected to be released once the findings are complete.
