Jose Martinez II & Ashley Garza Killed in Ascension Parish Crash on Interstate 10

A tragic crash on Interstate 10 in Ascension Parish claimed the lives of two Ohio residents on the evening of Feb. 1, 2026. Louisiana State Police say the accident occurred just before 8:30 p.m. near milepost 179 westbound, involving a Toyota RAV4 and a parked police vehicle.

Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop A reported that a 2022 Toyota RAV4 was traveling west in the left lane when it struck the rear of a 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe, a fully marked Gonzales Police Department unit. The police SUV was unoccupied at the time but had its emergency lights activated while officers were investigating a separate crash nearby. The reason the Toyota struck the parked vehicle is still under investigation.

The victims were identified as 32-year-old Jose Luis Martinez II and 32-year-old Ashley Garza, both from Cincinnati, Ohio. Martinez, seated in the rear left of the Toyota, was properly restrained but died at the scene. Garza, the rear right passenger, was also properly restrained and initially survived but succumbed to her injuries after being transported to a local hospital.

The driver and front seat passenger of the Toyota sustained moderate injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Troopers confirmed that all occupants were wearing seat belts. Routine toxicology testing will be conducted to determine whether impairment played a role in the crash, though results are not yet available.

Louisiana State Police emphasized the importance of the state’s Move Over Law, which requires drivers to slow down and change lanes when approaching emergency vehicles with flashing lights. Troopers said failing to follow the law places both first responders and the public at serious risk, especially when officers are working on active roadways.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing. Troopers are reviewing evidence, examining the scene, and working to determine the exact circumstances that led to the fatal collision. Authorities continue to remind drivers to remain alert on highways, reduce speed near emergency scenes, and be prepared for unexpected roadway conditions to prevent further tragedies.
