Jonathan Warren killed in fatal I-19 Hit-and-Run; De Leon Gonzalez Charged

TUCSON, Ariz. — A 19-year-old Sahuarita resident has been identified as the victim of a deadly hit-and-run on Interstate 19 early Tuesday morning. Authorities say the suspected driver is now in custody and facing charges after allegedly leaving the scene of the fatal crash.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety confirmed that Jonathan Warren was killed in the incident. Troopers responded at approximately 1:39 a.m. on March 3 to reports of a man walking in the travel lanes of I-19 near kilometer 78. When officers arrived, they found Warren deceased in the median lane of the highway.

Investigators determined the collision occurred near kilometer 76. According to DPS, no vehicles were present at the scene when troopers arrived, and no witnesses reported seeing the crash take place. The absence of immediate leads made the investigation more difficult in the early hours, as authorities worked to determine what kind of vehicle was involved and who may have been responsible.

A major break in the case came when investigators discovered car parts at the scene believed to belong to a 2018–2025 Mercedes Sprinter van. The vehicle debris provided crucial evidence that helped narrow the search. Troopers quickly began following up on that information as they sought to identify the driver connected to the damaged van.

Within hours, 57-year-old De Leon Gonzalez, a Tucson resident, went to the Sahuarita Police Department and reported that he may have been involved in the crash. Gonzalez has since been charged with failure to remain at the scene of a fatal collision. He is currently being held at the Pima County Jail on a $40,000 bond.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident. Authorities have not released additional details about what led Warren to be in the roadway at the time of the crash. As the case moves forward, the Sahuarita community mourns the tragic loss of a young life taken far too soon.
