PLAINFIELD — A tragic and deeply unsettling scene unfolded Monday evening after officers with the Plainfield Police Department responded to a home on Kate Downing Road following a chilling 911 call. The incident has left neighbors stunned and authorities working to piece together the events that led to the deaths of a married couple.
Shortly before 7:00 p.m. on February 23, 2026, John Ezzell contacted emergency dispatchers and reportedly stated that his wife, Christine Ezzell, was terminally ill and that he intended to take her life before ending his own. According to officials, Ezzell told dispatchers that the doors to the residence at 504 Kate Downing Road would be left open for responding officers.
When officers arrived at the home, they entered and discovered both John Ezzell, born June 20, 1963, and Christine Ezzell, born July 14, 1963, inside with apparent gunshot wounds. Emergency responders assessed the situation, but both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed that a firearm was recovered from inside the residence.
The couple’s bodies were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsies and further examination. Officials say the medical examiner’s findings will help determine the exact cause and manner of death, though preliminary information suggests a murder-suicide.
Neighbors described the incident as heartbreaking and difficult to comprehend. While few details about the couple’s personal circumstances have been released, the mention of a terminal illness has added another layer of sorrow to an already devastating event. Community members expressed sympathy for the family and friends now left to cope with the sudden loss.
Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue reviewing evidence and statements connected to the case. Officials have not released additional details but said more information may become available once the medical examiner’s report is complete. The Plainfield community now mourns a tragedy that unfolded quietly behind closed doors, leaving lasting questions and profound grief.
