TUMBLER RIDGE, B.C. — A devastating shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in northern British Columbia has claimed the lives of nine people, with seven killed at the school and two more fatalities discovered at a nearby residence. The suspected shooter, 17-year-old Jesse Strang, was also found dead from an apparent self-inflicted injury, authorities confirmed.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reported that more than 25 individuals were injured during the attack, including two who were airlifted to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Tumbler Ridge, a remote town of roughly 2,700 residents located over 1,000 kilometers northeast of Vancouver near the Alberta border, was left in shock following the incident.
Video from the scene captured students exiting the school with their hands raised as police vehicles surrounded the building and a helicopter hovered overhead. Authorities arrived at the school within two minutes of receiving the first reports of gunfire, according to British Columbia Premier David Eby. Law enforcement quickly secured the area and began assisting injured victims.
RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd confirmed the identity of the shooter as Jesse Strang, though officials have not released a motive or the connection between Strang and the victims. Investigators are carefully reviewing evidence, interviewing witnesses, and assessing the circumstances that led to the deadly attack.
Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka called the tragedy “devastating,” noting that he personally knew many of the victims. Local clergy and counselors have been providing support to families as the community begins the difficult process of grieving. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also expressed his condolences, praising the rapid response of first responders and temporarily suspending planned travel in light of the crisis.
School shootings are extremely rare in Canada due to strict gun control laws. Tuesday’s attack is the deadliest in the country since 2020, when a gunman in Nova Scotia killed 13 people and caused additional deaths in fires he set. Authorities continue to investigate the shooting, support victims and their families, and work to ensure the safety and recovery of the Tumbler Ridge community.
