An 87-year-old man from Nathalie, Virginia, was killed Wednesday evening in a devastating two-vehicle crash at a rural intersection in Pittsylvania County. The collision, which occurred around 6 p.m. on November 19, left two other people seriously injured and has prompted a full investigation by the Virginia State Police. What began as a routine drive along quiet country roads quickly turned fatal at the meeting point of Chatham Road and Beulah Road, an intersection known for its uneven traffic controls.
According to authorities, the deadly crash unfolded when a 2001 Ford Crown Victoria entered the intersection from Beulah Road, which is controlled by a stop sign. At the same time, a 2002 GMC Yukon was traveling west on Chatham Road, which does not require drivers to stop. For reasons still under review, the Crown Victoria moved forward into the path of the oncoming Yukon. With little time or space to avoid impact, the Yukon’s driver collided sharply with the sedan, causing severe damage to both vehicles.
The driver of the Crown Victoria, identified as Jesse W. Rone, was pronounced dead at the scene. Troopers reported that Rone was wearing his seatbelt, which suggests the force of the impact was overwhelming. Community members who knew the 87-year-old describe him as a familiar and well-liked resident of Nathalie, making news of his sudden passing especially difficult for friends and family. His death adds to the growing number of fatal accidents occurring on rural Virginia roadways this year.
A female passenger in Rone’s car suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment. Virginia State Police confirmed she was also wearing her seatbelt when the crash happened. The driver of the GMC Yukon sustained serious injuries as well and was taken for medical care. His name has not yet been released. Officials say both survivors are expected to undergo extensive treatment as investigators work to determine the full sequence of events.
State Police are examining several factors that may have contributed to the crash, including visibility conditions, potential driver error, and the layout of the intersection. Rural crossings like Chatham Road and Beulah Road can be challenging, especially after dark, when headlights and distance can be hard to judge.
