TROUP COUNTY, Ga. — A late-night shooting in Troup County has left one man dead and another injured, prompting a homicide investigation and the arrest of a suspect, according to the Troup County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies were called to the scene around 7:49 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, after receiving reports that two adult men had been shot at a residence on Big Springs Mountville Road.
When deputies arrived at 209 Big Springs Mountville Road, they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers immediately began performing life-saving measures while waiting for fire and emergency medical crews to arrive. Fire Department and EMS personnel quickly took over care, but despite efforts to save him, one of the victims did not survive.
The deceased victim was identified as Jeffery Scott, 54, who was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim, Walter Keene, 50, was also shot during the incident. Keene was transported to Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries. Authorities have not released an update on his condition, but confirmed he survived the attack.
As investigators worked to piece together what happened, they identified Zachary Thompkins, 32, as the suspect in the shooting. Deputies later located Thompkins at a residence on Greenville Road, where he was taken into custody without incident. Officials said the arrest was made peacefully, and no additional injuries were reported during the apprehension.
According to investigators with the Criminal Investigations Division, Thompkins allegedly went to the Mountville Road location to confront one of the victims over a prior disagreement. During the confrontation, investigators say Thompkins produced a firearm and shot both men before fleeing the scene. Detectives are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the dispute and what led it to turn deadly.
Thompkins has now been formally charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities say additional details may be released as the case progresses. The Troup County Sheriff’s Office has not indicated whether more charges could follow, but emphasized that detectives are still actively working the case.
