Authorities in Washington County have identified the woman killed in a weather-related crash Thursday afternoon at the interchange of I-70 and I-79. The Washington County Coroner’s Office confirmed that 64-year-old Jamie Doreen Wiles of Wheeling lost her life after the vehicle she was riding in lost control on an icy stretch of roadway. Emergency crews responded quickly, but despite their efforts, Wiles could not be saved.
Coroner Timothy Warco reported that freezing temperatures and widespread ice on the highway were major factors in the crash. As the vehicle traveled through the interchange, it hit a slick patch, lost traction, and spun out of control. The impact proved fatal for Wiles, who had been seated in the front passenger seat. Icy conditions had been affecting drivers throughout the afternoon, with emergency calls increasing as roads continued to deteriorate.
Two other occupants of the vehicle—a driver and a passenger seated in the back—were taken to a local hospital for treatment. While officials have not released details about their injuries, early indications suggest that both survived. Medical personnel are continuing to monitor their conditions as the investigation moves forward.
The crash involving Wiles was one of several incidents reported around the same time. At approximately 5:40 p.m., Washington County’s 911 center began receiving multiple calls about vehicles losing control along the same section of highway. Icy patches created dangerously unpredictable conditions, leading to a series of accidents that kept first responders busy throughout the evening.
Pennsylvania State Police are now leading the investigation into the crash. Their review will include an evaluation of the weather, road surface, speed of the vehicle, and any mechanical factors that may have played a role. Investigators may use witness statements, dash-camera video, and road-condition reports to determine exactly what happened. With several crashes occurring in the same area due to the weather, state police say the investigation may take time to complete.
Washington County officials have offered condolences to the family and friends of Jamie Doreen Wiles. Her sudden passing has deeply affected the Wheeling community, where loved ones are mourning her loss and trying to understand the tragic circumstances.
The incident highlights the dangers of winter weather driving. Authorities are reminding motorists to slow down, leave extra distance between vehicles, and remain alert when temperatures fall below freezing. Even when roads appear clear, ice—especially on bridges and ramps—can create deadly situations in just seconds. Further updates on the investigation are expected in the coming days as state police continue their review.
