GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A Grand Rapids neighborhood is reeling after a deadly shooting inside a home on Worden Street claimed the lives of a mother and her two young sons early Tuesday morning. Loved ones have identified the victims as Jacqueline Neill and her sons, Cameron Kilpatrick, 15, and Michael Kilpatrick, 13. Police say a suspect is now in custody as the investigation continues.
Grand Rapids police were called to the home just before 8 a.m. on Jan. 27 after neighbors reported hearing several gunshots. According to investigators, residents in the area said they heard shots coming from the house shortly before 7:45 a.m. Officers arrived and found all three victims dead inside the residence, prompting an immediate homicide investigation.
Family members confirmed the identities of the victims in a statement released Wednesday, describing the loss as devastating. “The tragic loss of our beloved Cameron and Michael Kilpatrick, and their mother, Jacqueline Neill, to a senseless act of violence has left our family utterly devastated,” the statement said. Relatives added that no words could fully express the pain of losing multiple family members at once.
In their statement, the family also expressed gratitude toward the Grand Rapids Police Department for its professionalism and compassion during the investigation. They thanked officers and victim advocates for their support and acknowledged the outpouring of love and concern from the greater Grand Rapids community. Family members said that support has helped them navigate an unimaginable time of grief.
Tuesday evening, police announced detectives were in contact with a person of interest in the case. By Wednesday, a source confirmed to FOX 17 that a 44-year-old man had been taken into police custody in connection with the shooting. Police have not identified the suspect because he has not yet been formally arraigned on criminal charges.
Authorities have not released details about a possible motive or the suspect’s relationship to the victims. The investigation remains active as detectives continue interviewing witnesses and reviewing evidence. Police say more information will be shared as it becomes available. As the community mourns, many are remembering Cameron and Michael as young lives full of promise and Jacqueline Neill as a devoted mother whose life was tragically cut short.
