A tragic two-vehicle crash claimed the life of a Berwick man Thursday morning and forced the closure of a busy roadway in Luzerne County. The deadly collision occurred along Route 11 in Plymouth Township, prompting a major response from emergency crews and state police.
According to the Pennsylvania State Police, the crash happened when one vehicle suddenly veered to the left, crossed over the double yellow line, and collided with an oncoming car. The impact was severe, leaving both vehicles heavily damaged and blocking traffic in both directions. Authorities immediately shut down Route 11 between Mill Street and Canal Street as first responders worked at the scene.
Troopers identified the driver who crossed the center line as 45-year-old Jack Unger of Berwick. Officials say Unger suffered multiple traumatic injuries as a result of the crash. Despite the quick arrival of emergency personnel, he was pronounced dead from the injuries he sustained. His sudden passing has left family members and loved ones grieving.
Police confirmed that both drivers involved in the collision were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. While seatbelts significantly improve safety and often reduce the risk of fatal injuries, head-on collisions remain among the most dangerous types of crashes due to the combined force of impact from two moving vehicles.
The roadway remained closed for an extended period as investigators examined the scene and crews cleared debris. Morning commuters were forced to find alternate routes while authorities worked to reopen the highway safely. The crash caused delays and disruptions throughout the surrounding area.
State police continue to investigate what caused the vehicle to cross into oncoming traffic. At this time, officials have not released additional details about contributing factors. As the investigation moves forward, the tragic incident stands as a sobering reminder of the dangers drivers can face on the road and the importance of remaining attentive at all times.
