Camden firefighter Howard Bennett killed in Delaware River

CAMDEN, N.J. — Howard Bennett, a veteran firefighter with the Camden Fire Department, has been identified as the man who died following a tragic work-related incident on the Delaware River on February 5. Bennett lost his life after falling through ice at the Wiggins Park Marina in Camden while on duty, according to the Professional Firefighters Association of New Jersey.

In a statement released by the firefighters’ union, Bennett was remembered as a longtime and dedicated member of the Camden Fire Department. Union President Mathew Caliente described the loss as devastating, calling Bennett a hero and emphasizing that the dangers firefighters face extend far beyond active fire scenes. “Our members put their lives on the line every single day,” Caliente said, noting that the tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the risks tied to the profession.

The incident occurred sometime between 11 and 11:30 a.m., Camden City Mayor Victor Carstarphen confirmed during a press conference. Officials said Bennett was aboard a fire boat conducting a routine maintenance check when he somehow fell into the icy waters of the Delaware River. Despite immediate rescue efforts, Bennett was later pronounced dead.

Firefighters from multiple agencies, including departments from Philadelphia, responded to assist in the rescue attempt. Crews worked urgently under difficult conditions, but were ultimately unable to save him. Camden Fire Chief Jesse Flax said the entire department is mourning the loss of a colleague who was deeply committed to his work. “He was a dedicated firefighter who understood and knew his job very well,” Flax said.

Condolences poured in from local and state leaders following confirmation of Bennett’s death. Camden County Commissioner Jonathan Young issued a statement on behalf of the county commissioners, extending sympathies to Bennett’s family and the Camden Fire Department. Young highlighted the sacrifices made by first responders and their families, saying the loss is felt not only in Camden but throughout New Jersey.

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill also shared her condolences, expressing heartbreak over the loss of the veteran firefighter. As the community grieves, officials and colleagues continue to honor Bennett’s service and sacrifice. The circumstances surrounding the fall remain under review, but leaders say Bennett’s dedication and bravery will not be forgotten, as Camden and the wider firefighting community mourn a life lost in the line of duty.
