CHICAGO — Authorities have released the identities of three people killed in a devastating crash early Sunday morning on the Dan Ryan Expressway. Among the victims was a 12-year-old boy, marking yet another tragic loss on one of Chicago’s busiest highways.
According to Illinois State Police, the crash occurred shortly before 2 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the Dan Ryan near the I-57 split. Troopers responded to reports of a serious collision involving multiple victims. Upon arrival, officers found several people with fatal injuries at the scene. All southbound traffic was diverted at 95th Street for several hours as investigators worked to determine what happened.
Authorities confirmed Monday that the victims were 12-year-old Joseph Chacon, 34-year-old Gloria Aria, and 52-year-old Gregory Chacon. Officials have not yet disclosed the relationships between the victims, but sources familiar with the investigation suggest they may have been family members traveling together.
The exact circumstances surrounding the crash remain unclear. Police have not confirmed how many vehicles were involved, what may have caused the collision, or whether speed, impairment, or road conditions played a role. The Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit is continuing its investigation.
The deadly incident caused significant delays and detours along the Dan Ryan for much of Sunday morning. Commuters described the scene as chaotic, with emergency lights filling the roadway and several vehicles stopped in the southbound lanes. Cleanup and recovery efforts lasted for hours before all lanes were reopened.
As of Monday afternoon, no further information had been released. Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage from the area between 1:30 and 2 a.m. to come forward. The tragic deaths of Joseph Chacon, Gloria Aria, and Gregory Chacon have left family, friends, and community members heartbroken as investigators continue to search for answers.
