CHICAGO — A 26-year-old woman was killed in a shocking daytime shooting Wednesday in Chicago’s Gresham neighborhood, leaving a community grieving and demanding answers. Authorities say Gabryel Ayers was fatally shot multiple times while riding in a vehicle with a 27-year-old man and an infant, in what police describe as a violent and targeted attack that unleashed dozens of bullets on a residential street.
The shooting happened around 1:25 p.m. in the 7900 block of South May Street, according to Chicago police. Ayers was riding in a white Chevrolet sedan when gunfire suddenly erupted. The hail of bullets struck the vehicle, causing the driver to lose control and crash into a parked brown GMC van. Neighbors were left stunned as the sound of rapid gunfire shattered the afternoon calm.
Ayers was critically wounded and rushed to OSF Little Company of Mary Medical Center, where she later died from her injuries. The 27-year-old man inside the car was also hit, suffering gunshot wounds to his arm and buttocks. He was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was listed in good condition and is expected to recover.
A baby girl under the age of one, who was seated in the back of the car, was miraculously not hurt. Police confirmed the infant escaped without injuries, a detail that has deeply affected investigators and residents alike. The driver of the GMC van that was struck during the crash declined medical treatment at the scene.
Investigators say the attack was especially intense and brazen. Reports indicate at least three suspects armed with long guns opened fire, unleashing a barrage of bullets before fleeing the area. Evidence markers placed along the street showed more than 50 shell casings, underscoring the sheer volume of gunfire and the danger posed to anyone nearby.
Ayers’ godfather, Pastor Kirk Bell, spoke out in anger and heartbreak following her death, condemning the violence that claimed her life. “These animals have no value on life,” he said, expressing the pain felt by the family and the wider community. As of Thursday, no arrests have been made, and area detectives continue to investigate. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward as they work to identify those responsible for the deadly ambush.
