Two Christian County Deputies Killed in Line of Duty During Multi-Agency Manhunt

CHRISTIAN COUNTY, Mo. — The Christian County community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of two sheriff’s deputies who were killed in the line of duty during a multi-agency manhunt that ended early Tuesday morning. The Christian County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the fallen deputies as 30-year-old Deputy Gabriel Ramirez and 40-year-old Deputy Michael Hislope.

Deputy Ramirez joined the department on March 14, 2025. Though his tenure was brief, officials said he quickly demonstrated a deep commitment to protecting and serving the community. Deputy Hislope had served with the agency since October 28, 2019, and was remembered as a dedicated public servant and trusted colleague. Both men were veterans of the United States Army who continued their call to service in law enforcement after their military careers.

The tragic chain of events began around 4:00 p.m. Monday when a deputy conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of State Highway 160 and Route HH, south of Highlandville. During the stop, gunfire erupted, fatally wounding Deputy Ramirez and sparking an intense manhunt across the region. Authorities later discovered the suspect’s abandoned vehicle, prompting a coordinated search involving nearly 100 officers.

Multiple agencies assisted in the search effort, including the United States Marshals Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The search concluded near the roundabout on Highway 160 close to Reeds Spring after a helicopter operated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol detected movement in a wooded area.

According to Sheriff Brad Cole, as deputies approached the location, the suspect, identified as Richard Bird, opened fire. Officers returned fire, fatally striking Bird and ending the threat. During the exchange, one additional deputy from Christian County and one from the Webster County Sheriff’s Office were wounded. Authorities said their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

While the suspect has been neutralized, the loss of Deputies Ramirez and Hislope has left a deep void within the department and the broader Ozarks community. Flags are lowered, tributes are pouring in, and fellow officers stand united in grief. Two deputies who dedicated their lives to service did not return home, and their courage and sacrifice will not be forgotten.
