23-year-old Frederick Robertson killed in fatal shooting in Birmingham

Authorities have released more information about a tragic early-morning shooting in Birmingham that left one man dead and another injured, adding to the city’s growing number of homicides this year. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 23-year-old Frederick Demond Robertson, a Birmingham resident whose life was cut short in the Bush Hills neighborhood. His death has left many in the community grieving and searching for answers as police continue their investigation.

According to Birmingham Police, the shooting happened just before sunrise, around 5:57 a.m. Tuesday along Fifth Avenue West. Neighbors reported waking up to several loud gunshots, and multiple callers contacted emergency services. A city-operated gunfire detection system also picked up numerous rounds in the area, confirming the scale of the gunfire. Officers arrived within minutes, responding both to the 911 calls and the alert triggered by the detection system.

Upon reaching the scene, police discovered a vehicle with extensive damage from multiple bullet strikes parked near the curb. Inside the vehicle, officers found Robertson unresponsive. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at 6:22 a.m. A second man who had been inside the same vehicle was taken to a Birmingham hospital by a private driver before authorities arrived. Police have not released his identity or condition but confirmed he survived the attack.

Investigators believe that both men were sitting in the vehicle when one or more assailants approached and opened fire at close range. Detectives are working to determine how many shooters were involved, what type of weapon was used, and whether the victims were specifically targeted. At this point, no arrests have been made, and authorities have not named any suspects. The motive behind the shooting remains unknown as investigators continue gathering details, reviewing surveillance footage, and speaking with potential witnesses.

The Bush Hills community, known for its quiet early-morning hours, has been left rattled by the sudden eruption of violence. Residents say the gunfire broke the calm typically seen in the neighborhood at that hour, raising concerns about safety. Many are calling for renewed efforts to address gun violence, emphasizing the need for community cooperation and vigilance to help prevent future tragedies. Robertson’s death marks the 80th homicide recorded in Birmingham this year, highlighting the ongoing struggle the city faces with violent crime.

Police are urging anyone with information—no matter how small it may seem—to come forward and assist investigators. Detectives say even minor observations, such as unfamiliar vehicles or people seen leaving the area quickly, could help piece together what happened. As the investigation continues, Robertson’s family, friends, and neighbors are left mourning a devastating loss while hoping justice will soon be served.
