Eric Stinson, 44, Dies After Being Struck on U.S. Route 202 in Winthrop

WINTHROP, Maine — Authorities in Winthrop have identified the pedestrian who died following a Wednesday evening crash on U.S. Route 202 as 44-year-old Eric O. Stinson of Pittston. Stinson was transported to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, where he later succumbed to his injuries, leaving family and friends in shock over the sudden loss.

According to Winthrop Police Chief Paul Ferland, the collision occurred just before 6 p.m. near the Winthrop Veterinary Hospital. A black 2015 Dodge pickup truck, driven eastbound by 51-year-old Merton Ward of Augusta, struck Stinson. Officials noted that the speed limit on that portion of Route 202 is 55 mph, emphasizing the challenges pedestrians face on high-speed roadways.

Emergency responders from Winthrop police, fire, and ambulance services quickly arrived at the scene to provide aid. Route 202 was closed for approximately three and a half hours while crews worked to secure the area, assist the injured, and allow investigators to document the scene. Traffic was rerouted as authorities conducted their initial review.

Investigators from Maine State Police reconstructed the crash, with assistance from Monmouth Police. The Kennebec-Somerset District Attorney’s Office was also notified and remains involved in the ongoing investigation. Officials have not released information regarding any potential charges, and the circumstances of the crash are still under review, including factors such as speed, visibility, and roadway conditions.

Police Chief Ferland stressed the importance of awareness for both drivers and pedestrians. “Residents should be especially alert on highways, particularly in areas with pedestrian activity,” he said. Authorities are urging motorists to slow down in areas where people may be walking or crossing, and for pedestrians to remain visible and cautious when near roadways.

The tragic death of Stinson has left the local community reeling.
