The community of Midland, Georgia, is mourning after a devastating domestic violence incident that claimed three lives and left a family shattered. The tragedy, which unfolded on the evening of November 17, 2025, also brought attention to the bravery of Kelly Grigsby, a mother who acted quickly to protect her young child. Her courage served as a crucial lifeline during a moment of unimaginable fear and chaos. This heartbreaking event stands as a stark reminder of the seriousness of domestic violence and the urgent need for awareness and intervention.
Around 6:50 p.m., Harris County Deputies were dispatched to a home at 103 Christophers Way following a frantic 911 call. According to officials, the caller was Mrs. Kelly Grigsby, who had escaped to a neighbor’s home with her five-year-old child after her husband, Eric Grigsby, threatened to kill the children in the home. She also reported that he had made violent threats toward responding officers. Her quick action not only protected her child but may have prevented even greater loss of life. The details she shared with dispatchers allowed deputies to prepare for a highly dangerous situation.
As deputies approached the residence, the home suddenly went dark, a troubling sign that forced officers to adopt tactical precautions. Patrol vehicles were positioned to shine bright “take-down lights” toward the front entrance to gain visibility. Moments later, Eric Grigsby emerged from the driveway holding two handguns. Deputies issued repeated commands for him to stop and drop the weapons, but he ignored them and instead raised the guns toward officers. With no other option, deputies opened fire. Grigsby returned fire before he was ultimately stopped.
After securing the scene, deputies made a heartbreaking discovery inside the home. Two teenage boys—ages 16 and 14—had been shot. The 16-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 14-year-old died shortly after, despite emergency efforts by first responders. Both victims were the stepsons of Eric Grigsby. The tragic loss of these young lives has left the community grief-stricken, prompting a wave of support for the surviving family members.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) arrived soon after to conduct an independent review, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings. Sheriff Mike Jolley described the event as a “tragic Family Violence Shooting,” praising deputies for following their training under extreme and dangerous conditions. He also emphasized the heartbreak felt across the county as the community tries to make sense of such a devastating act of violence.
