Authorities in Louisiana are investigating a fatal weekend crash in Livingston Parish that claimed the life of a 57-year-old Springfield man. The Louisiana State Police (LSP) identified the victim as Earl Duncan, who died following a two-vehicle collision that occurred Sunday afternoon along Louisiana Highway 43 near Haynes Settlement Road.
According to preliminary reports, both vehicles were traveling northbound on La. 43 when the tragic accident occurred. Investigators say Duncan was riding a motorcycle while another vehicle—a car—was also heading north. As the car entered a passing zone to overtake the motorcycle, Duncan attempted a left turn, inadvertently moving into the car’s path. The vehicles collided moments later, resulting in fatal injuries to Duncan.
Emergency personnel quickly responded to the scene after reports of the crash came in. Despite immediate medical efforts, Duncan was pronounced dead at the scene. Police confirmed that he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, in full compliance with Louisiana’s safety laws. The driver of the car, who was properly restrained by a seat belt, escaped injury. Investigators do not believe impairment played a role in the collision, though toxicology tests are being conducted as standard protocol.
LSP troopers and local first responders worked for several hours to clear the scene and document evidence. Traffic along La. 43 was temporarily closed in both directions, causing brief delays for motorists in the area. Authorities are continuing to investigate the exact sequence of events, including whether visibility, speed, or roadway conditions may have contributed to the incident.
In their public statement, Louisiana State Police urged all motorists—especially motorcyclists—to remain vigilant and cautious when driving on rural highways. They emphasized that riders should check mirrors and signal carefully before turning, particularly when other vehicles may be attempting to pass. Likewise, drivers of larger vehicles were reminded to maintain safe following distances and ensure full visibility before overtaking slower traffic.
Motorcycle safety remains a priority for law enforcement agencies across Louisiana. Officials noted that riders face greater risks on the road due to reduced visibility and limited protection. They encouraged all motorcyclists to wear proper gear, including helmets and reflective clothing. Community members in Springfield have expressed deep sorrow over Duncan’s passing, remembering him as a friendly neighbor and avid motorcyclist. The investigation remains ongoing under LSP Troop A, with findings expected to be submitted to the Livingston Parish District Attorney’s Office once complete.
