POLAND, Maine — A tragic head-on collision Tuesday afternoon claimed the life of a young man and left two others seriously injured in Androscoggin County, prompting an ongoing investigation by local authorities. The crash occurred on February 10, 2026, around 3:40 p.m., in the 300 block of Plains Road, a stretch of roadway that became the scene of devastation and loss.
According to the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to reports of a two-vehicle crash along with Poland Fire-Rescue. Investigators say a silver 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, driven by 52-year-old Edward Morris of Mechanic Falls, was traveling westbound while towing an enclosed snowmobile trailer. At the same time, a gray 2016 Jeep Cherokee was heading eastbound on Plains Road.
Authorities report that the Jeep, driven by 26-year-old Dylan Sanphy of Gorham, attempted to pass another vehicle while traveling east. During the passing maneuver, the Jeep crossed into the westbound lane and collided head-on with Morris’ pickup truck. The impact occurred in the westbound travel lane and resulted in catastrophic damage to both vehicles.
Sanphy was pronounced deceased at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash. Two adult female passengers riding in the Jeep suffered serious injuries and were transported to Central Maine Medical Center for emergency treatment. Their current conditions have not been released. Morris was evaluated by emergency personnel at the scene and did not require transportation to a hospital.
Both the Jeep Cherokee and the Chevrolet Silverado sustained severe front-end damage and were deemed total losses. A crash reconstructionist with the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist with determining the exact circumstances leading up to the collision. Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including the Mechanic Falls Police Department, Oxford Fire-Rescue, and Auburn Fire-Rescue.
Investigators are now seeking information about a third vehicle involved indirectly in the incident. The vehicle being passed by the Jeep has been described as a Subaru that did not remain at the scene. Deputy Chris Miller is asking the occupant or occupants of that vehicle, as well as anyone who may have witnessed the crash, to come forward. Those with information are urged to contact Deputy Miller at cmiller@androscoggincountymaine.gov or by calling 207-753-2599 as the investigation continues.
