A deadly house fire in Dothan claimed the life of a 71-year-old woman Monday afternoon, marking a tragic loss for her family and the surrounding community. Authorities say the fire spread rapidly through a residence on Monroe Street, leaving little time to react before the home was overtaken by flames.
Houston County Coroner Robert Byrd identified the victim as Eva Flemings, 71, a longtime Dothan resident. The fire occurred in the 800 block of Monroe Street, where Flemings lived with her adult son and daughter. Emergency crews were called to the scene after reports of a structure fire engulfing the home.
According to the coroner, Flemings had been inside the house earlier that afternoon with both of her children. Her son reportedly left for a short period to take his sister to another residence. When he returned, he found the home completely engulfed in flames, prompting an immediate call to emergency services.
Firefighters from the Dothan Fire Department responded and worked to extinguish the blaze while rescuing Flemings from inside the burning structure. She was transported to Southeast Health for medical treatment. Despite emergency care, Flemings later died from her injuries, officials confirmed.
Authorities said her adult son and daughter were not injured in the fire. No additional details have been released about how Flemings became trapped inside the home or the extent of the damage. Family members have not spoken publicly as they mourn the sudden and devastating loss.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The State Fire Marshal’s Office, working alongside the Dothan Fire Department, is examining the scene to determine what sparked the blaze. Investigators will review possible electrical issues, household appliances, and other potential factors.
Officials emphasized that fire investigations can take time, especially when damage is extensive. They also urged residents to ensure working smoke detectors are installed and to have fire escape plans in place. As the investigation continues, the community is remembering Eva Flemings while awaiting answers about the tragic fire that claimed her life.
