A heartbreaking accident Saturday night in Tyler claimed the life of a 15-year-old Tyler High School student, leaving family members, classmates, and educators grieving a sudden and painful loss. Authorities say the teen died after being struck by a vehicle while crossing a busy roadway near Loop 323 and Van Highway.
According to the Tyler Police Department, the crash happened late Saturday night near the intersection of Loop 323 and Van Highway. Investigators said the teenager was crossing Loop 323 on foot, just north of Van Highway, in an area where there was no marked crosswalk or intersection. Police said the teen walked into the path of a northbound vehicle traveling in the inside lane.
Officers said the vehicle struck the teen, causing severe injuries. The driver remained at the scene and fully cooperated with investigators. Emergency crews responded and transported the teen to a local hospital for treatment, but despite medical efforts, he later died from his injuries.
In a letter sent to parents, guardians, and staff, Tyler High School administrators identified the victim as Derrick Holt, a student at the school. School officials expressed deep sorrow over the loss and acknowledged the emotional toll the tragedy has taken on the campus community.
“This is a heartbreaking loss for our school community, and our thoughts are with Derrick’s family, friends, classmates, and teachers during this incredibly difficult time,” the letter stated. Administrators also emphasized that the school is respecting the family’s privacy as they grieve and said information about ways to support the family will be shared if and when appropriate.
To help students and staff cope with the loss, the school said additional counseling services will be available on campus. Police continue to investigate the crash, but no charges have been announced. Authorities are reminding pedestrians and drivers alike to remain alert, especially along busy roadways like Loop 323. As the Tyler community mourns, loved ones are remembering Derrick Holt as a young life taken far too soon, leaving a lasting impact on those who knew him.
