HAMPTON, Va. — A quiet Hampton neighborhood was shaken early Tuesday morning after two connected shootings left one man dead and another injured. Authorities say the violence unfolded shortly after midnight and are continuing to investigate what led to the deadly encounter.
Officers with the Hampton Police Division were dispatched around 12:31 a.m. to a residence in the 2000 block of North Armistead Avenue following reports of gunfire. When police arrived at the home, they discovered a man inside suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite emergency response efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim has been identified as Deejayinks Shelton, 30, of Hollywood, Florida. Police have officially classified his death as a homicide. Investigators have not yet released details about what may have sparked the shooting or whether Shelton knew the suspect. Authorities are working to piece together the events that unfolded inside the residence.
Shortly after the initial shooting, a second victim arrived at Sentara CarePlex Hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Detectives later confirmed that both shootings were connected. According to a preliminary investigation, both men were at the Armistead Avenue home when gunfire erupted. The second victim fled outside after hearing shots and was struck by gunfire before managing to drive himself to the hospital for treatment.
Police believe the incident was isolated and does not pose an ongoing threat to the broader community. However, investigators with the department’s Major Crimes Unit are actively gathering evidence, speaking with witnesses, and reviewing any available surveillance footage from the area. No arrests have been announced, and authorities have not released a suspect description.
