ROCHESTER, Minn. — A Stewartville man was killed late Thursday night following a serious crash near Rochester International Airport, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. The collision involved a passenger van and a semi-truck and occurred on a busy stretch of Highway 63.
State Patrol officials said the crash happened at approximately 9:46 p.m. on February 5 on Highway 63 near 80th Street Southeast. Both vehicles were traveling northbound when they collided. Troopers responded to the scene and found significant damage to the van as well as traffic disruptions in the area.
The driver of the van was identified as 48-year-old Daniel Victor Schandorff of Stewartville. Authorities said Schandorff suffered fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. The State Patrol confirmed that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. Officials said additional information about Schandorff is expected to be released later.
The driver of the semi-truck was identified as 55-year-old Jack Lieffort of Grand Meadow. Lieffort was not injured in the crash and did not require medical treatment, according to authorities. No other injuries were reported.
The crash caused temporary traffic impacts as emergency crews secured the scene and investigators worked to document evidence. Troopers examined vehicle damage, skid marks, and roadway conditions as part of the initial investigation. Officials did not release details about what led to the collision or how the vehicles came into contact.
