Daniel Hyatt Killed in Early-Morning Shooting During Alleged Home Invasion in Harrodsburg

HARRODSBURG, Ky. — A 36-year-old man was shot and killed early Friday morning during what authorities believe was an alleged home invasion at a residence in Harrodsburg, according to the Harrodsburg Police Department. Officials say the incident appears isolated and does not pose a threat to the public.

Harrodsburg Police Chief Scott Elder said officers were dispatched around 5 a.m. on Friday, February 6, after receiving a 911 call reporting a shooting at a home in the 300 block of York Street. “We received a 911 call from this address, this residence behind me, in reference to a shooting,” Elder said while speaking with reporters at the scene.

When officers arrived, they secured the area and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting inside the residence. Police have not released details about what led up to the gunfire but described the incident as an alleged home invasion. Authorities emphasized that the situation was confined to the home and that there is no ongoing danger to surrounding residents.

The Mercer County Coroner’s Office later identified the victim as Daniel Hyatt, 36. Hyatt was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials said his body is being transported to Frankfort for an autopsy, which is a standard procedure in fatal shooting investigations to determine the official cause of death.

Chief Elder confirmed that the homeowner involved has not been charged at this time. Police have not said whether Hyatt knew the homeowner or if anyone else was inside the residence when the shooting occurred. Investigators are continuing to review physical evidence, conduct interviews, and establish a timeline of events leading up to the 911 call.

Neighbors told reporters they did not hear gunfire during the early morning hours and were surprised to see a heavy police presence in the neighborhood later in the morning. Police vehicles remained on scene for several hours as investigators worked. The Harrodsburg Police Department said the investigation remains ongoing and that additional details will be released as they become available.
