Authorities have confirmed that Da-Quain Johnson, the man shot by officers Wednesday night, died Thursday morning at a local hospital. The incident has sparked questions in the community as state investigators review the circumstances that led to the deadly encounter.
According to Deputy Chief Joseph Trigg of the Grand Rapids Police Department, officers were alerted around 9:30 p.m. to a man riding a bicycle who was potentially armed. When officers attempted to approach Johnson near M.L.K. Jr. Street and Eastern Avenue, he reportedly fled on his bike. Officers pursued him into a parking lot behind a nearby apartment complex.
Police said a K-9 unit was deployed during the pursuit. Deputy Chief Trigg stated that the canine likely bit Johnson, but he continued to resist and struggle with officers. Authorities said the confrontation escalated during the physical encounter as officers attempted to gain control of the situation.
During the struggle, one officer discharged their weapon after Johnson reportedly produced a handgun. He was struck by at least one bullet and immediately transported to a local hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, Johnson later succumbed to his injuries. Officials have not confirmed whether Johnson fired the weapon during the encounter.
In accordance with department protocol, the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The Michigan State Police have taken over the investigation to ensure an independent review of the shooting. Authorities said they will examine body camera footage, witness statements, and forensic evidence as part of the process.
The fatal shooting has left many in the community seeking clarity and answers. Officials have urged residents to remain patient as investigators work to determine the full sequence of events. Additional details are expected to be released once the investigation progresses and more information becomes available.
