The Fresno community is devastated after a horrific two-vehicle crash early Sunday morning tragically claimed the life of one person. The victim has been identified by the Fresno Police Department as 30-year-old Crystal Barrera, who was a passenger in the collision that occurred at the busy intersection of Cedar and McKinley avenues.
The fatal crash took place around 1:45 a.m. when police officers rushed to the scene. According to investigators, a Honda sedan was driving at a dangerously high rate of speed while heading northbound on Cedar Avenue. The Honda then violently rear-ended a Chevy Impala that was approaching the intersection, causing a massive impact.
The force of the collision was catastrophic. It pushed the Chevy Impala completely through the intersection and across into the southbound lanes of Cedar, leaving the vehicle with extensive damage. Emergency medical teams quickly arrived to give aid to the injured parties at the scene of the wreckage.
The male driver of the Chevy Impala suffered serious injuries and was quickly taken to Community Regional Medical Center for emergency treatment. Sadly, the passenger, Crystal Barrera, was pronounced dead at the scene. This senseless loss has left her family and friends heartbroken.
The driver of the Honda was also taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. However, police later determined that this driver was under the influence at the time of the crash and was subsequently placed under arrest. The Fresno Police Department continues to investigate the full circumstances surrounding this preventable tragedy.
Crystal Barrera is being remembered by her loved ones as a bright, kindhearted, and loving soul whose life was cut short far too soon. Her friends and family describe her as being full of laughter and deeply devoted to those around her. Authorities are reminding all drivers of the severe dangers of impaired and reckless driving, choices that lead to irreversible heartbreak for entire communities.
