The California Highway Patrol said a Toyota Corolla traveling northbound struck the rear of a parked big rig that was stopped along the right shoulder of the freeway. Officials stated that the impact was severe and left the driver trapped inside the vehicle. It is not yet clear why the truck was parked on the shoulder at the time of the crash.
Emergency responders arrived shortly after the collision was reported. Despite their efforts, Claudia Funk was pronounced deceased at the scene.
