Christopher Righi Killed While Directing Traffic Around Disabled Vehicle in Cumberland County

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. — Authorities in Cumberland County are investigating a tragic pedestrian crash that claimed the life of a 37-year-old man Monday evening in North Newton Township. The incident happened as the victim was attempting to help manage traffic around a disabled vehicle along a rural roadway.

According to the Cumberland County Coroner’s Office, the fatal crash occurred at approximately 5:41 p.m. in the 300 block of Green Spring Road. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene after reports that a person had been struck by a vehicle. When responders arrived, they found the victim suffering from severe injuries.

The coroner’s office identified the victim as Christopher Alan Righi, 37, of Newville. Officials said Righi was outside of a vehicle and attempting to direct traffic around a disabled car when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle. The circumstances surrounding why the vehicle was disabled have not yet been released.

Authorities said Righi sustained multiple traumatic injuries as a result of the collision. Despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The coroner’s office ruled his death an accident pending the outcome of the investigation.

Pennsylvania State Police have taken over the investigation and are working to determine exactly what led up to the crash. Troopers are examining the roadway, vehicle evidence, and any possible contributing factors, including lighting conditions, visibility, speed, and driver actions at the time of the incident. No information has been released regarding potential charges or citations.

The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by motorists and pedestrians when vehicles become disabled along roadways, especially during evening hours. State police urge drivers to slow down, remain alert, and proceed with caution when approaching stopped vehicles or people near the road.
