23-year-old Georgia Man Killed in Violent I-71 Rollover Crash in Warren County

WARREN COUNTY, Ohio — A tragic early-morning crash along Interstate 71 claimed the life of a 23-year-old Georgia man after his vehicle rolled over multiple times in Warren County, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The deadly crash occurred around 4 a.m. Saturday in Turtle Creek Township, near the Morrow-Lebanon exit.

Troopers identified the victim as Charles Watkins of La Fayette, Georgia. Authorities say Watkins was driving a 2023 Honda CR-V northbound on I-71 when the vehicle traveled off the left side of the roadway for reasons that have not yet been determined. The SUV then rolled over several times, causing catastrophic damage.

During the violent rollover, Watkins was ejected from the vehicle and thrown into the southbound lanes of the interstate, troopers said. He was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash. Investigators confirmed Watkins was the only occupant in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Watkins was not wearing a seat belt. Troopers noted that ejection from a vehicle significantly increases the risk of fatal injuries, especially during rollover crashes at highway speeds. No other vehicles were reported to be involved in the incident.

Southbound lanes of I-71 were impacted for a period of time as emergency crews and investigators worked the scene. Traffic was slowed while troopers documented evidence, cleared debris, and ensured the roadway was safe for travel. The crash occurred during overnight hours, when visibility is reduced and driver fatigue can be a factor.

At this time, it remains unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. Troopers said the investigation is ongoing, and additional details may be released once all evidence has been reviewed. The Ohio State Highway Patrol is reminding drivers to always wear seat belts, obey speed limits, and remain alert while traveling, particularly during early morning hours when conditions can be more dangerous.
