PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — A quiet Sunday evening in Nokesville turned tragic after a motorcyclist lost his life in a crash along Kettle Run Road. Prince William County police are now investigating the deadly incident, which happened just minutes before 7 p.m. on Jan. 11. The crash has left family members and the local community mourning the sudden loss of a life.
According to police, officers were called to the area of Kettle Run Road and Schaeffer Lane after receiving reports of a serious motorcycle crash. When first responders arrived at the scene, they found a man who had been critically injured. Emergency crews quickly provided aid before rushing the motorcyclist to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
Investigators say a preliminary review shows the man was riding a 2023 Harley-Davidson Road Glide southbound on Kettle Run Road. As he approached Schaeffer Lane, the roadway curved to the left. Police believe the rider attempted to navigate the curve but lost control of the motorcycle during the turn.
The motorcycle ran off the road and struck a concrete culvert, causing severe injuries to the rider. The impact was strong enough to cause life-threatening harm, officials said. Despite the efforts of first responders and hospital staff, the man did not survive.
The motorcyclist has been identified as Charles Melvin Smith Jr. of Warrenton. Authorities confirmed that Smith later died at the hospital as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. His death has sent shockwaves through those who knew him, as friends and loved ones struggle to come to terms with the sudden tragedy.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and have not said whether speed, road conditions, or other factors may have played a role. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information is encouraged to contact Prince William County police. As the investigation continues, officials are reminding all drivers and riders to remain alert and cautious, especially when navigating curves and rural roadways.
