SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Authorities have identified the man who was killed in a deadly road rage incident on the city’s North Side earlier this week as 58-year-old Celerino Gonzales Jr. According to the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office, Gonzales died from gunshot wounds sustained during a confrontation that police have officially ruled a homicide.
The tragic encounter unfolded around 5:30 p.m. on Monday, November 10, in the 11200 block of Belair Drive, following multiple reports of gunfire. When San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) officers arrived, they found Gonzales inside his vehicle suffering from critical injuries. Despite immediate lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The shooting has since rattled the community and prompted renewed discussions about the dangers of escalating road rage.
Investigators say the incident began as a dispute between Gonzales and another driver, 23-year-old David Flores Oyervides III, during a heated exchange while driving. The situation reportedly escalated once both men reached a nearby residential area. According to a preliminary report, Gonzales followed Oyervides to his home, where both men exchanged gunfire. Authorities believe Oyervides briefly went inside to retrieve another weapon before firing additional rounds at Gonzales as he attempted to drive away.
Police said Gonzales’s vehicle came to a stop a short distance from the scene after he was struck by gunfire. Evidence gathered by SAPD indicates that Gonzales also returned fire during the confrontation. After interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage, investigators identified Oyervides as the suspect. He was taken into custody on Wednesday and booked into the Bexar County Adult Detention Center, where he faces a murder charge and is being held on a $250,000 bond.
Detectives continue to investigate what sparked the confrontation and how it escalated so quickly. Authorities are reviewing additional evidence, including nearby security footage and ballistic analyses, to determine the precise sequence of events. Police emphasized that road rage situations can turn deadly in moments and urged drivers to avoid confrontation, remain calm, and call law enforcement if they feel threatened.
The community has expressed sorrow and concern over Gonzales’s death, with many calling for greater awareness around aggressive driving behavior. Officials have extended condolences to the Gonzales family and assured the public that the case remains an active investigation. Further updates will be released as detectives complete their review of evidence and witness statements.
