Authorities in Texas have identified a woman who died in a tragic single-vehicle crash Monday afternoon in Clay County. The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed the crash happened around 3 p.m. along a major highway in the area. The incident has left family members grieving and has renewed concerns about seatbelt use and roadway safety.
According to DPS, the driver was a 59-year-old Carol Jean Smith from the region who was traveling southbound at the time of the crash. Investigators said she failed to maintain her lane and moved from one lane into another. While trying to correct the vehicle’s path, she overcorrected, causing the car to leave the roadway. The vehicle then traveled off the highway and came to rest in a roadside ditch.
Troopers said the woman was not wearing a seatbelt when the crash occurred. Because she was unrestrained, she was ejected from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries. Authorities confirmed she was the only person inside the vehicle, and no other cars were involved in the crash. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but she was pronounced dead due to the severity of her injuries.
