A tragic late-night crash in Lebanon County has left two families mourning after a violent collision claimed the lives of two drivers on Tuesday night. The heartbreaking incident occurred in South Lebanon Township and has shaken the local community as authorities continue working to determine exactly what led to the deadly crash.
According to the South Lebanon Township Police Department, officers responded to the 3100 block of State Drive at approximately 10:10 p.m. after receiving reports of a serious two-vehicle crash. When emergency responders arrived at the scene, they found both vehicles severely damaged, indicating the impact had been extremely powerful.
Authorities later confirmed that both drivers involved in the crash died at the scene. The victims were identified as Cole David Steffy, 47, of Mansfield, and Rilee Caileb Knable, 19, of Palmyra. Officials from the Lebanon County Coroner’s Office arrived at the scene and formally pronounced both individuals dead.
Preliminary findings from investigators indicate that Steffy was traveling northbound along State Drive shortly before the crash. For reasons that remain unclear, his vehicle reportedly crossed over the center line and entered the southbound lane of traffic. Police say the vehicle then collided head-on with Knable’s car, resulting in a devastating impact that left both drivers with fatal injuries.
The crash forced authorities to close portions of the roadway for several hours as investigators carefully documented the scene and worked to piece together what happened in the moments leading up to the collision. Officials have not yet said whether speed, mechanical failure, medical issues, or other possible factors may have played a role in the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing as police continue gathering evidence and reviewing details related to the incident. The South Lebanon Township Police Department is asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has additional information about what happened to contact them. As the investigation continues, the tragic loss of two lives serves as a painful reminder of how quickly lives can change on the road.
