ALLEGHANY COUNTY, Va. — Virginia State Police are investigating a deadly single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a Covington man early Tuesday morning along Interstate 64 in Alleghany County. The crash occurred in the eastbound lanes and resulted in the death of the elderly driver after he was taken to the hospital.
State police identified the driver as 91-year-old Billy Jack Camden of Covington. According to authorities, Camden was transported from the crash scene to a nearby hospital for treatment, but he later died from his injuries. No other vehicles were reported to be involved in the crash.
Troopers said they were dispatched shortly after the incident on Tuesday morning, Jan. 13, 2026, to eastbound Interstate 64 near mile marker 1.1. When officers arrived, they found a Subaru Crosstrek that had sustained significant damage after leaving the roadway.
According to the preliminary investigation, Camden was driving eastbound on I-64 when his vehicle lost control for reasons that have not yet been determined. The Subaru struck a guardrail along the interstate, causing serious injuries to the driver. Authorities have not said whether weather, speed, a medical issue, or road conditions may have contributed to the crash.
Emergency responders worked at the scene while troopers conducted an initial investigation and cleared the roadway. Traffic in the area was impacted for a period of time as crews worked to remove the damaged vehicle and ensure the area was safe for motorists traveling through the corridor.
The crash remains under investigation by the Virginia State Police. Troopers will continue to examine evidence from the scene, review vehicle data, and determine what led to the loss of control. Officials have not released additional details at this time. Drivers are reminded to remain alert while traveling on interstates, especially during early morning hours, and to report any hazardous conditions to authorities.
