30-Year-Old Avery Reed killed in Decatur Crash Involving 18-Wheeler

DECATUR, Ala. — Authorities have identified the man who died following a serious three-vehicle crash involving an 18-wheeler in Decatur. The wreck, which happened Tuesday afternoon, shut down a busy stretch of roadway and remains under investigation by local authorities.

Morgan County Coroner Jeff Chunn confirmed Wednesday that the victim was 30-year-old Avery Allen Reed. Officials said Reed was critically injured in the collision and was rushed to Morgan County Hospital. Despite medical efforts, Reed later died from his injuries, marking a tragic loss for his family and loved ones.

The crash occurred just before 3 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Highway 67 and Refuge Headquarters Road. Police said the collision involved three vehicles, including a commercial 18-wheeler. The force of the crash caused significant damage at the scene and prompted a large emergency response.

In addition to Reed, a second male was injured in the wreck. Authorities said he was transported to Decatur Morgan Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. His identity has not been released, and no additional information has been provided about his current condition.

Decatur Police officers responded to the scene along with Decatur Fire and Decatur Morgan EMS. Emergency crews worked quickly to assist the injured, secure the area, and manage traffic as investigators began examining the crash site. Portions of the roadway were impacted as responders worked to clear the scene and gather evidence.

The Decatur Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit is leading the investigation into the crash. Officials have not yet released details about what caused the collision or whether any charges may be filed. Investigators are expected to review vehicle damage, roadway conditions, and witness statements to determine how the wreck occurred. Authorities are urging drivers to use caution on busy roadways and to remain alert, especially near intersections where serious crashes can happen in an instant.
