EL PASO, Texas — A pedestrian was killed in a late-afternoon crash in downtown El Paso, and the incident is now under investigation by the El Paso Police Department’s Special Traffic Investigations Unit. The collision occurred Wednesday, February 4, 2026, and marked another tragic loss on city streets as authorities work to determine the exact circumstances leading up to the fatal impact.
Police said officers were called to the 300 block of West Rio Grande at approximately 4:59 p.m. after reports of a vehicle striking a pedestrian. The area, located near the downtown core, typically experiences steady traffic during evening hours as commuters and pedestrians move through the district. Emergency crews arrived quickly and secured the scene while medical aid was provided.
According to investigators, a 2014 Audi Q7 driven by a 31-year-old man was traveling westbound on Rio Grande when the collision occurred. Police said the pedestrian crossed the roadway in front of the vehicle and was not using a designated crosswalk at the time. The vehicle struck the pedestrian, causing severe injuries that required immediate medical attention.
The pedestrian was identified as Arturo Frias Moreno, 57. He was transported to a local hospital following the crash, where doctors worked to save his life. Despite treatment, Moreno later died from the injuries he sustained in the collision, police confirmed. His death has been ruled traffic-related, and no additional injuries were reported.
