CINCINNATI — Cincinnati police have identified the teenager found shot in the Hartwell neighborhood Wednesday afternoon as Anthony Davis, 18. Davis later died from his injuries, and his death is now being investigated by the Cincinnati Police Department’s Homicide Unit. The shooting prompted a heavy police presence in the area and led nearby schools to briefly enter lockdown as a precaution.
Police said officers were initially dispatched around 2 p.m. on Feb. 5 to the 8300 block of Burns Avenue after reports of a vehicle collision. When first responders arrived at the scene, they discovered that Davis had suffered an apparent gunshot wound. The circumstances surrounding how the shooting occurred remain under investigation, but authorities confirmed the incident was not a simple traffic crash.
Davis was rushed to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center with serious injuries. Despite efforts by medical staff, he later died at the hospital, police said. His death was confirmed later Wednesday, turning the incident into a homicide investigation. The area around Burns Avenue remained active with police as detectives worked to gather evidence and speak with witnesses.
A police sergeant at the scene told Enquirer media partner FOX19 that three other people were inside the vehicle with Davis at the time of the shooting. Authorities said all three individuals fled the scene before officers arrived. Their identities and whereabouts have not been released, and investigators are working to locate them as potential witnesses.
The shooting occurred near Hartwell Elementary School, prompting Wyoming City Schools to take immediate safety measures. District officials said police advised schools to enter an exterior lockdown due to a “safety concern in Hartwell.” Dismissal was delayed as officers worked an active crime scene nearby. Around 3:17 p.m., school officials notified families that the lockdown had been lifted and normal operations could resume.
Cincinnati police continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to Davis’s death, including where the shooting took place and what led to the gunfire. No arrests have been announced, and police have not released information about a suspect. Anyone with information related to the case is urged to contact the Cincinnati Police Homicide Unit at 513-352-3542. Authorities say community assistance could be critical in helping bring clarity and accountability in the death of Anthony Davis.
