Authorities in Wyoming are investigating a deadly two-vehicle crash that claimed the life of 36-year-old Andrew Winter of Torrington on March 1. The collision occurred along Wyoming Highway 59 near milepost 35, approximately 35 miles north of Douglas, and has raised concerns about roadway safety on rural highways in the state.
According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, troopers were dispatched at around 8:42 p.m. after a report of a serious collision. Preliminary findings indicate that Winter, driving a northbound Volkswagen Tiguan, left the roadway on the right side. In an attempt to correct, the vehicle oversteered, causing it to cross into the southbound lane and collide with an oncoming Toyota Tundra.
Winter was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel. Investigators noted that he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, which may have contributed to the severity of his injuries. Authorities are continuing to examine whether other factors, including road conditions or vehicle performance, played a role in the fatal incident.
The driver of the Toyota Tundra, 39-year-old Christopher Thomas of Buffalo, sustained serious injuries in the collision. He was transported by medical helicopter to Banner Wyoming Medical Center for emergency treatment. Officials have not provided additional details about his current condition.
The crash comes amid growing concern over roadway safety in Wyoming. The Wyoming Highway Patrol reports that the number of traffic fatalities so far in 2026 has reached 21, compared with 15 during the same period in 2025 and 11 in 2024. Officials emphasize the importance of maintaining control on rural highways, wearing seat belts, and driving cautiously in areas where road conditions can change rapidly.
Authorities say the investigation remains active as troopers review evidence from the scene, gather witness accounts, and examine factors that may have contributed to the crash.
