MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A 23-year-old woman died early Friday morning after a residential structure fire broke out in the 600 block of South Panama Street, according to Montgomery Fire/Rescue officials. The fire prompted a large emergency response and left firefighters working to determine what caused the deadly blaze.
Montgomery Fire/Rescue units were dispatched to the scene at approximately 6:35 a.m. after receiving reports of a possible structure fire. Responding crews included Engine 6, Engine 11, Truck 42, Rescue 90, and Car 31. Rescue 90 arrived first and observed heavy smoke and flames coming from the single-story residence, prompting firefighters to declare a working fire.
Fire crews immediately began an interior attack on the fire while simultaneously conducting a primary search of the home to locate any possible occupants. During that search, firefighters discovered a female victim inside the residence. She was later identified as Alayna Lasley, 23.
Despite lifesaving efforts, Lasley was pronounced dead at the scene. Fire officials did not release details about where in the home she was found or whether smoke alarms were present and functioning at the time of the fire. No other injuries were reported.
The fire caused significant damage to the residence, and crews remained on scene for several hours to extinguish remaining hot spots and secure the structure. Neighbors in the area reported seeing thick smoke rising from the home as firefighters worked to control the flames during the early morning hours.
The Montgomery Fire Rescue Bureau of Investigations is now leading the investigation into the cause of the fire. Officials said the investigation is ongoing and that more information will be released once the cause has been determined. Fire officials are reminding residents to take fire safety precautions, including ensuring working smoke alarms are installed and maintaining heating and electrical systems to help prevent similar tragedies.
