Islamic Center Shooting of San Diego Leaves Three Victims and Two Teen Suspects Dead in Suspected Hate Attack

A tragic and violent attack at the Islamic Center of San Diego has left three people dead and two teenage suspects also deceased, in an incident authorities are investigating as a possible hate-motivated shooting. The deadly event has shocked the San Diego community and raised serious concerns about safety at places of worship, especially as families, including children, were present at the time of the attack.

According to San Diego police, the shooting occurred Monday morning at the Islamic Center complex located about nine miles from downtown San Diego. The facility includes a mosque, school programs, and a preschool, meaning children and staff were inside the building when gunfire erupted outside. Officers responded quickly after reports of shots fired, arriving to a chaotic and dangerous scene as emergency measures were immediately put in place.

Investigators say two armed individuals, identified as 17-year-old Cain Clark and 18-year-old Caleb Vasquez, opened fire outside the mosque, killing three people before fleeing the area. Police later discovered the suspects inside a vehicle where both were found dead from what officials believe were self-inflicted gunshot wounds following the attack. Authorities believe the suspects died shortly after leaving the scene.

Law enforcement officials also revealed that Clark’s mother had contacted police earlier in the day, reporting her son missing and warning that firearms had been taken from the home. She expressed concern that he was suicidal and possibly dangerous. During the investigation, officers recovered a suicide note and written materials that indicated extremist beliefs. Authorities also found hateful messages connected to weapons believed to have been used in the attack, leading investigators to classify the incident as a targeted hate crime.

The victims include a mosque security guard and two community members, one of whom was identified as a local business owner. Officials praised the actions of the security guard, saying he made an effort to protect others inside the center during the attack. Despite his efforts, he and the two other victims were fatally wounded. Witnesses described terrifying scenes as people rushed to protect children and evacuate students from the building while gunfire rang out nearby. Fortunately, no children were physically harmed, though many were left deeply traumatized.

The Islamic Center of San Diego announced that it will remain closed indefinitely as the community mourns the loss of life and processes the traumatic event. In a public statement, the center expressed deep grief for the victims and gratitude toward first responders who responded quickly and helped secure the area. As investigators continue to examine the suspects’ background, planning, and possible ideological influences, the city of San Diego is left grieving a devastating act of violence that has deeply shaken families, worshippers, and residents across the region.
